Rudolph the Green-Nosed Reindeer

What with all the flying-reindeer emissions, heating a workshop at the North Pole, and causing the deaths of millions of baby evergreen-trees every December, Santa Claus sure ain't the most environmentally-conscience, earth-friendly guy on the planet. Just taking into account his annual round-the-world flight, Santa's carbon footprint even rivals those of those big-energy swilling smog-monsters like Al Gore and Michael Moore!

When his lead reindeer makes an attempt to go green, and comply with the new CFL mandate, Santa sees red, and gives Rudolph his walking papers – or in this case I guess it would be "flying papers." I think Santa's is still holding a grudge from the time he flew his sleigh into the government-subsidized wind turbine, which caused him to crash land into one of those (also government subsidized) Solyndra solar panels.

(No baby evergreen-trees were harmed in the making of the Christmas Card – but a whole bunch of adult evergreen-trees were chopped down, coated in tar, and used to hang cables on so I could upload this e-card from my computer to my to my blog. Those poor chopped down, tar-coated evergreen trees... nobody even bothers to decorate them... well maybe the birds do... and probably even flying reindeer sometimes, too.)

Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Badger, too!

In early drafts, Milne and Shepard introduced Eegore Hunny-Badger to the lovable cast-of-characters that lived, and frolicked in the the Hundred Acre Woods. Regretfully, they were soon to realize their creative blunder – that a Pooh Bear, a Hunny Badger, and a hunny pot were a bad-mix, and, pretty much, an "accident" waiting to happen. Sure enough, it wasn't long 'til the Badger, in a battle for sole possession of the hunny pot, "accidentally," and quite literally, kicked the stuffing out of the Pooh Bear! Fearing lawsuits from PC loving/cartoon-violence hating parents and lawyers, the creators hastily returned to the drawing board, and the way-too-cranky Eegore Hunny-Badger was declawed, defanged, given a complete makeover, and reintroduced as the still way-too-cranky, but definitely far-more PC and docile Eeyore the Donkey... at least they let him keep nifty clip-on bow tail!

The tubby little cubby was re-stuffed with fluff, and after a few thousand stitches was good as new.

The Beard of the Ranger is Upon You!

It's not the eyes of the Ranger that bad-guys need fear... it's the stubble!

As a public service to our readers, (and an opportunity to simultaneously goof on two of our favorite internet-crazes) we at Right-Hemisphere Laboratory, once and for all, have set out to debunk the widespread myth that: Chuck Norris is concealing a third fist behind his beard.

The above illustration (drawn from an actual true-life event) proves the "fist-chin behind-the-beard" theory to be impossible! Simply put, Mr. Norris does not wear a beard – Mr. Norris wears a Crazy Bad-Ass Honey Badger – the snarling psycho-beast that puts the BAD in BADger! This also explains why Mr. Norris never shaves his "beard" – A honey-badger beard is the toughest beard on earth, and no razor known to man, not even the Schiick Super-Duper-Hydro-Glide–Octo-Plus Blade TM can handle it's unbelievable toughness. Besides that, Chuck is an animal lover, and would never harm any animal, that he wasn't planning to eat – which would usually be raw: fur, bones, entrails, and all.

Pound for pound the Honey Badger is said to be the most fearless animal on earth (next to Chuck, of course), and is proven to be the only animal brave enough (or stupid enough) to live on Chuck Norris' chin. This new evidence, however, doesn't rule out the possibility of a third fist lurking behind the Honey Badger, but so far, no one insane enough to take a peek that "curtain of certain- death," has lived to verify this as fact.

Scientists still remain baffled as to what type of creature could be fierce enough to take up residence on Chuck's pectoral muscles – it is their stated opinion that even a Honey Badger wouldn't be stupid enough go there!

The above rendering depicts one of the most beautiful examples of symbiosis ever found in nature – it portrays the stealthy, cunning, and lethal team of Chuck and his "Beard-ger" obtaining/preparing one of their favorite delicacies – a delicious meal of Black-Mamba Sushi.

So, all you bad guys out there, unless you want a terminal case of stubble-burn... don't mess with Chuck!

Here's a remake of an old cartoon. The top one, drawn when I was a slightly younger cartoonist, is the original, then there are 3 rough sketches followed by the new version. Not to brag or anything, but when I compare the new 'toon to the original, I think I've come a long way! Learning which end of the crayon to hold was certainly a big help.

There's one caricature artist, in the Denver scene, that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd, seriously, about a foot or more above the rest of the crowd! Friend and colleague, Frank Farrar is a giant among Denver caricaturists/cartoonists, and is one of the humorous illustrators that I really look up to (unless I happen to be wearing my platforms). No, seriously (for real this time) Frank can draw like nobody's business, and can come up with funny cartoon gags all day long. His work has that vintage MAD look to it, and, Frankly, I can't believe the art directors at MAD have never inducted him into the usual gang of idiots.

Here are some new quick-sketch display samples for when I work a certain retail caricature-booth here in town. I wanted to get some more practice with drawing couples, too. Also, after 4 months of slacking, I wanted to finally get something posted on my poor, neglected, dust-old blog. These are similar, in both technique and style, to my live on-the-spot caricature work. If you need a caricature artist for your next event, send me a quick email, and I'll give you the name of somebody who can actually draw caricatures... if it turns out they're not available, I'd be happy to help you out.

Return of the Smooth Character

Free-speech loving Big Nanny shut him up, and forced him into a 14-year exile, but Joe Camel proudly announces his triumphant return. That's right, 14 years and 15,000 packs of smokes later (and looking only slightly worse for the wear) Joe begins his new career as a cigarette warning-label icon. Wishing him a long, happy, and healthy-ish comeback career.

A smoking related side-note: I was recently watching a DVD of some old Twilight Zone episodes when all of a sudden, to my shock and horror, there's non-other than Rod Serling, pushing Oasis cigarettes: "The freshest taste in smoking today... Smokers who know, now smoke the big O". What, how can this be?! This is a major oversight by Big Nanny! How did these vile ads for vintage smokes slip by them, and end up where anyone (even kids ) could see them? Well, without Big Nanny to protect me from myself, upon seeing the ad, I was instantly hooked! I spent the next couple of days Jonesing and searching for a refreshing pack of Oasis, but to no avail... it turns out Oasis was freshest taste in smoking today, but not anymore, in fact it seems they've been off the market for quite some time. Well, I'm not settling for less than the fresh taste of Oasis, so I guess I'm gonna have to tough it out, and quit cold turkey!

Captain's Log: Here I am, on some distant planet, battling a giant crawling-brain, and racking up some serious roaming charges.

An editorial cartoon on the recent cell-phone/brain-cancer media scare, prompted by the World Health Organization (WHO) report classifying cell-phone emissions as being “possibly carcinogenic."

I'm not buying it, but if the WHO ever issues a report claiming a link to sudden strokes and heart-failure caused by reading your cell-phone bill – now there's a story I would believe. I'd even swear off opening, and reading any cell-phone bills that arrive in my mailbox. Maybe then we could even lobby congress to pass a law banning those nasty stroke-inducing cell-phone bills!

Now where'd I put my cell phone, all this blogging is giving me a headache... I think I should call my friendly-neighborhood trial lawyer.

A recent Mediscare ad depicts a mysterious figure, wheeling a defenseless "granny" to the edge of a cliff, then callously tossing her onto the jagged rocks below. Actually it looked more like a giant rag-doll being tossed onto the jagged rocks below, but nevertheless the folks here at Right-Hemisphere Laboratory were curious to learn just who this mysterious rag-doll tossing figure might be.

Well, as luck would have it, our anonymous sources (who will remain undisclosed and nameless) were able to obtain this single never-before-seen film frame, carelessly left behind on the cutting-room floor. Upon close inspection, the discarded frame reveals the true identity of the mysterious figure (please see the image posted above), and a possible alternate ending for the spot... look for its inclusion in the director's cut!

Life Size Caricature

A group caricature I just finished up for a client. My assignment was to capture/commemorate their annual Earth Day video conference in a group caricature/humorous illustration. I was hidden, off camera, in the lower left corner, stealthily, and furiously sketching away. I took a stack of rough sketches back to the studio, where I completed the illustration. The technology they used for the meeting is actually their own product, and is some super cool, hi-tech stuff.

The individuals, labeled with letters, in the reference photo, and the fellow in the inset photo, were those included in the final piece.

Believe it or not, the indecipherable mess in the last image is actually a drawing... some of my preliminary chicken-scratches.

Mini Me

Mini me at the Mini Con

Me and my buddy, Brooke, who also happens to be one of my favorite Denver caricaturists, got to work the Mini Con this Summer – the Mini Cooper Con, that is. Brooke designed this nifty base-art for us, so all of the guests we drew could go home in a Mini of their own.

I decided to start out the new year right, and do my semi-annual studio clean-up, in the process I found some left over paper from the Mini gig, and decided it was high time for a new self-caricature. The real me will probably never get the chance to drive one of these fine machines, but cartoon me can. Real me is also not nearly this good-looking, but I'm the artist, so I get to call the shots. That's my trusty side-kick Olive (Oyl) riding shotgun – she's an awesome copilot, and warns me of oncoming obstacles like potholes, speed-bumps, and cats!

A gift caricature done for my mad-scientist neighbor who built his very own electric car out of spare parts he dug up at the auto-graveyard.

The first take was a bit off – I think he turned out looking somewhat like an older version of Norm McDonald – but I think the second one is a keeper. I'm not too happy with my choice of bg color, though... I wish markers and Prismacolors came with "command-z".

Stealth and Recall Caricatures

Between caricature gigs, and freelance assignments, I spent some time this summer drawing caricatures at Casa Bonita. Yes, the same Casa Bonita featured in the South Park episode. Of course, when anyone asks what I do at Casa, I tell the I'm one of the cliff divers... chicks really dig cliff divers!

Most of the shifts have the occasional down-time, so to keep busy, and get a little practice in, I would draw Stealth Caricatures: these were drawings of random/unsuspecting guests who were watching the puppet show, the pinata get pummeled, or just loitering around the caricature booth. Knowing the victim wasn't paying for the drawing, and would never even see it really freed me up to try some new things. Another great exercise (time-killer) was to draw Recall Caricatures: here I would try drawing someone from memory, after having drawn them in the chair. I found this also helped me to push things, and not get so @#!$! literal... these almost always turned out better than the first drawing. Here are a few examples of both...

Dig These Cool Ghouls!

Wow, kids are back in school, summer is winding down, and Halloween season is rapidly approaching! As a bonus for my dedicated readers (all 3 of you), so you you won't be caught off guard (again) by all those little ghouls and goblins, I thought I would post this handy-dandy Halloween to-do list:

• Buy Candy!
• Carve Pumpkins.
• Hang faded, old, cardboard skeleton on door.
• Hang faded, old, cardboard witch in window.
• Watch "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" for the 800th time.
• Buy 2 dozen rolls of TP, 4 bars soap, and 3 dozen eggs.
• Hire a caricature artist for Halloween Party!

That's right... you'll need something to throw all those eggs and TP at, and caricature artists make great targets! We can also draw funny pictures of you, and your guests in your Halloween costumes! Caricatures make great Halloween party favors, and they won't even rot your teeth or upset your stomach – well they may upset your stomach, so I don't recommend eating them.

Here are three 50's icons who are bigger now than they were in life – about as undead as you can get – I figured the Zombie treatment was fitting. These are all quick-sketch caricatures, similar to my live event-caricatures.

I did a series of O Pickles T-shirt designs back in 2006. The bigger dog was used in the ruff layout, but was later replace by the smaller pup. I decided to use 'em both, and gang up on Mr. Pickles, for this week's IF post: "Double".

I take 3 months off of blogging, and all my blog gets is this crummy T-shirt!

It's been a crazy summer so far – lots of caricature gigs! Freelance assignments have been steady, as well, but mostly production art – nothing really exciting enough to post.

I was cleaning out the crawl space the other day, for a garage sale, and found a forgotten stash of moth-eaten, old T-shirts that I designed back in the '90s. This one "Road Hogs" was my favorite of the bunch – way back from my brush & ink period – hand lettering even! You wouldn't catch me doing that now – I musta been more ambitious (out of my mind) back then, not to mention my vision was about a hundred times better... thank goodness for computers, vector art, and the "Zoom" tool!

Well, I really felt bad for neglecting li'l Son of Right-Hemisphere Laboratory for so long, and thought maybe this ratty old T-shirt would cheer him up.

I'll let ya all know when the garage sale happens – I'll be running a special on moth-eaten, crummy old T-shirts!

The Three Stooges

The Three Horsemen of Boulder Dam

I've been watching a lot of Stooges shorts lately, and decided it's about time I did a caricature of them! Here's Curly, Larry, and Moe in "Three Little Pigskins." Things got a little rough during the filming this short: Larry Fine had a tooth knocked out by a mistimed punch, Curly Howard broke his leg riding down a dumbwaiter, and several other actors and stuntmen also sustained broken bones. I've included the flying tooth, and protruding bone for the sake of historical accuracy, not for gratuitous cartoony-violence... I would never stoop to such cheap gimmicks!

Flying Monkey Business

Her flying-minions take to hurling verbal, and the other kind of excrement at the Wicked Witch of the West, after learning that her new health-care act will only cover treatment for maladies, ailments, and disorders of their left wings.

The Rough Sketch

Back in the pre-digital era, I would go through layers of tracing paper 'til I arrived at tight pencils, then inking with a brush, then finally color. By the time I finished a piece, it felt like I'd drawn the same image over a couple o' thousand times. If it's for a client, I usually gotta tighten up the sketch a bit, but these days my pencils tend to look like the example above – pretty much indecipherable to anyone but me – clean-up, inking, and color all happen at the same time in Adobe Illustrator. I love being able to illustrate directly over a really rough sketch, and not have to trace, and retrace o the point of sucking all the energy out of it. Sometimes I think it would be fun to go back to a more traditional approach – if they ever invent a Winsor Newton series 7 #3 with a built in "Command Z", I might actually consider doing it.

Cartoon-Typos: Mickey Louse and Polluto

M-I-C-K-E-Y L-O-U-S-E...

Our crack staff of researchers, here at Right-Hemisphere Laboratory, have unearthed some never-before-seen "cartoon-typos." The theory is that these drawings were the result of some form of miscommunication between a show's director, and the character-design dept. In some cases the designer may have misread or misunderstood the direction provided, in others, it may simply have been a typo on the character spec-sheet provided to the designer – hence the term coined by our crack staff of researchers: "cartoon-typos." The drawing shown above, an early take on Mickey and Pluto, is actual production art, obtained by our sources from the Disney Studios, and is a perfect example of a cartoon-typo. We are proud to present it here for the first time ever! We will continue our efforts to procure more of these important lost-relics of cartoon-animation history, and will post more cartoon-typos of the the animation world's best-loved cartoon characters as soon as they become available... stay 'tooned!

Prairie Dog sketches

A Field Guide to Prairie Dogs of Colorado

Regal, majestic, and sure of foot, the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep must have been the obvious choice for Colorado's official state animal, but if you've done any hiking along the front range, you know that Cynomys Ludovicianus is top dog in the Centennial State. Yes, the industrious, lovable, little Prairie dog (barking rat) is a pretty common sight around here... they may not be every man's best friend (especially in Nucla, CO), but hawks, coyotes, and ferrets sure love 'em!

Lately I've been doing a fair amount of hiking in prairie-dog country. I decided I should take along my sketch pad, and put together this little "field guide" for all of my fellow prairie-dog lovers. It includes several sketches, to help you identify some of the more common species found in Colorado. Feel free to print it out, and take it along on your next prairie-dog watching expedition... be careful not to trip over the little fire hydrants!

The runaway Toyota media-hype is very reminiscent of the Alar scare, wayward rodents in chicken nuggets, exploding silicone implants, Y2k, swine flu, and even global warming!

What's become of journalism in this country? A pretty sorry bunch... especially those esteemed members of the Washington Press Corpse!

I've got a lot going on this week so I just banged out a rough sketch for now... maybe color later this week.

This one's pretty gross, but isn't there a little circus geek in all of us? Easter's right around the corner... we'll all be biting the heads off of those poor, defenseless, little Easter Peeps before you know it... mmmm.... marshmallowy!

A "cell" that I designed for a Flinch animation project, and as a tribute to the Grillo Bros. Look for it in the Flinch showreel. If you watch closely you'll spot some more of my stuff… let me know if you have any guesses.

Flash Backwards

Back in '05, I finally decided to fulfill a life-long dream, and attempt to become an animator. I bought Toon Boom Studio, and got to work creating some of my own shorts. TBS is a great program, but after knocking on some doors, I discovered the studios I liked best were all using Flash. I made the switch to Flash, and got back to work on those shorts. My favorite of those studios was Flinch Studio: dating back to the days of FutureSplash, Flinch are legendary, and true pioneers in Flash animation, they create cartoons that are wild, funny, irreverent, and defy any "limitations" imposed by Flash. I used to read articles about them, study their cartoons, and dream about how great it would be to work for a studio like Flinch. Well, dreams come true, in '06 I got my chance. Tony Grillo: super-amazing cartoon director, and Fearless Leader of the Flinch Tribe finally got tired of my begging, and brought me on board. After proving myself somewhat worthy at sweeping floors, I was enlisted to work on a line of animated e-cards. I spent the next year and a half, collaborating with Tony, his brother, Steve, and the rest of the amazing Flinch crew on 17 of those e-cards – not sure what the total number of cards produced was, but many more were created with other designers. Creatively, it was one of my best gigs ever, and definitely a dream job for this cartoonist. My contribution to the production pipeline - in addition to keeping those floors all spiffy looking - was design, storyboarding, and story/gag writing, but it was the director, animatic dept., and animators that really made things happen. It was so cool seeing my corpse-like characters brought to life, and bouncing around the frames, once the rest of the crew had worked their magic! Working with Flinch was also some of the best training I've ever received, I quickly realized that I'd barley scratched the surface with Flash – these guys were doing stuff with Flash that wasn't in any of the books – I was a wimpy white belt in a world of Flash Ninjas! I don't think I ever achieved Ninja status, but maybe earned the highly coveted rank of mauve or chartreuse belt!

Hot 'Toon

Between paying gigs, I like to work on projects of my own, but I've been taking some time off from working on new portfolio pieces, and just getting back to some cartooning/drawing basics – practicing my scales, so to speak. Speaking of scales here's an old 'toon from the groove-yard... this is goes back about 20 years, and is one of my first promos as a freelancer. It was way before Al Gore's internet invention really caught on, so I sent it via snail mail, an it had my phone number rather than the url. I even drew it with one of those primitive instruments, known, back in cave painting days, as a "brush". It's pretty much just blog filler material, but I figured I better post something before I forgot how.

Olive Oyl

On Christmas morning I was surprised to find a 5 lb. Cairn Terrorizer... er... I mean Terrier waiting under the tree for me! I named her Olive Oyl after my favorite female cartoon character, and she's every bit as feisty as her namesake. She's also really smart, and can already do lots of cool tricks, like: sit, stay, shake, rollover, poop, pee, and chew things up! Here are a couple of caricatures of the little monster... the tiny pooch in the second sketch is her little sister, Star. Between freelance jobs, and cleaning up puddles, I've had little time to work on new stuff for the portfolio, but if Olive will release her grip on my drawing arm for a while, I may actually try to finish one of these.

The Legendary Lardass

We at Right-Hemisphere Laboratory are proud to share with our viewers, the first-ever artist's rendition of the soon-to-be legendary Lardass, also known as Sasquat! The newly discovered Lardass is believed to be a distant, and lesser-known cousin of the already legendary Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch. Though originally thought to be bipedal, through extensive "foot" print analysis, the Lardass was later determined to be a quadruped with arms! Yes, you heard that right... 6 limbs! Over 75% of all documented Lardass sightings, have reported the pilfering of camp sights, with beer, junk-food products, and hi-tech gaming devices, being the most sought after items. Cryptozoologists believe that after several generations of such a diet and activities, the Lardass has evolved into the only known creature with ambulatory buttock-muscles. While the Lardass is able to cover great distances on its powerful, highly-evolved glutes, the appendages which once served as its legs, having become specialized in tearing open Frito's bags, cracking open "cold ones", and deftly operating even the most complex remote, are nearly worthless as a means of transportation. Lardasses also have an unexplained fondness for copy machines, and are frequently spotted loitering near these devices at holiday office parties.

Marley and Me

A last minute gift caricature. Actually it's not me, but the dog is named Marley. Definite Gross influence on Marley... can't help it... Milt's dogs are the coolest!

Anybody out there need one of these for next Christmas, let me know. They also make nice birthday, retirement, wedding, employee-appreciation, anniversary, and graduation gifts... and not just for dogs... people like 'em, too!
